Birmingham’s Leading Bruxism Specialists

Trapezius Botox At Our Birmingham Clinic.

Chronic neck and shoulder tension is one of the most common forms of musculoskeletal pain in the UK, and for many people it never fully resolves despite rest, massage and physiotherapy.

The trapezius muscle, which runs from the base of the skull across the shoulders and down the upper back, is frequently the source. When it becomes persistently overactive, it causes pain, stiffness, headaches and the kind of deep shoulder tension that feels impossible to shift.

Botox injected into the trapezius offers two meaningful benefits: targeted pain and tension relief, and a slimmer, more elongated neck and shoulder profile for patients who find the muscle has become visually overdeveloped. At The Bruxism Clinic in Birmingham, Dr. Farmah offers this treatment as part of a broader approach to jaw, neck and facial muscle health.

Why is the Trapezius A Problem Area?

The trapezius is a large, diamond-shaped muscle that extends from the base of the skull, across both shoulders and down to the mid-back. It is responsible for moving and stabilising the shoulder blades, supporting the head and enabling a wide range of neck and arm movements. Because of its size and the demands placed on it, it is one of the most commonly overloaded muscles in the body.

Pain is often felt in the trapezius muscles as an aching sensation. Emotional and psychological stress can result in prolonged muscle tension and shortening, which leads to continued muscular fatigue. Referred pain can be felt up and around the back of the head and over to the eyes.

When the trapezius becomes chronically tense, the effects are wide-ranging: persistent neck and shoulder pain, restricted movement, tension headaches and a general sense of tightness and fatigue that does not resolve with stretching alone.

In people who carry significant muscular bulk in this area, the overdeveloped upper trapezius can also create a visual heaviness across the neck and shoulders that many patients find uncomfortable.

Could it be Bruxism?

For patients who also grind or clench their teeth, trapezius tension is frequently not a coincidence. The jaw and neck operate as an interconnected muscular system, and chronic overactivity in one area reliably creates strain in the other.

Research has found that high levels of muscle tenderness in the upper trapezius and temporalis muscles correlate with high levels of jaw and neck dysfunction, and that high levels of neck disability correlate with high levels of jaw disability. These findings emphasise the importance of considering the neck and its structures when evaluating and treating patients with TMD.

Increased tension in the upper trapezius muscles, which run across the top of the shoulders and lower neck, can lead to jaw clenching and headaches.

The relationship works in both directions: bruxism creates downstream tension in the neck and trapezius, and chronic trapezius overactivity can worsen jaw clenching.

For patients being treated for bruxism at The Bruxism Clinic, trapezius Botox can be a valuable complementary treatment that addresses the broader pattern of tension rather than just the jaw in isolation.

How Can Trapezius Botox Help You?

By reducing the contractile force of the trapezius muscle, Botox allows it to relax in a way that manual therapies alone often cannot achieve.

The persistent low-level contraction that causes chronic pain and headaches is significantly reduced, giving the muscle the chance to decompress and recover.

After the injection takes effect, the temporary reduction in muscle activity should help to relieve pain and neck spasm.

What Happens During Your Teeth Grinding Treatment.

What to expect when you step into our Birmingham Clinic:

Consultation

Dr. Farmah will assess your symptoms, discuss your goals and confirm whether trapezius Botox is appropriate for you. If you are also being treated for bruxism, he will consider how the two treatments can work together for the best overall outcome. No GP referral is needed.

During treatment

Using an ultra-fine needle, precise injections are placed into the upper trapezius muscle on each side. The procedure takes around 30 minutes and most patients find it very comfortable. You can return to normal activities immediately afterwards.

After treatment

Avoid intense exercise for 24 hours. Some patients notice a mild sense of fatigue or reduced strength in the shoulder area during the first couple of weeks as the muscle adjusts. This is expected and temporary.

Your results

Pain relief typically begins within two weeks as the muscle relaxes. The cosmetic slimming effect develops more gradually, becoming visible from around four to six weeks and continuing over the following months as the muscle reduces in size. Results last five months or more.

Your Questions About Trapezius Botox Answered.

Still have questions about Trapezius Botox? Check out some of our frequently asked questions.

Is trapezius Botox painful?

The pain rating is 1 out of 5. An ultra-fine needle is used and most patients find the procedure comfortable throughout. Any minor discomfort at the injection site settles quickly.

How is this different from a massage or physiotherapy?

Massage and physiotherapy address the symptoms of trapezius tension and can provide temporary relief, but they cannot reduce the muscle’s underlying contractile activity. Botox works at the neuromuscular level, reducing the force of contractions directly. Many patients find it provides relief that manual therapies alone have not been able to achieve.

Will it affect my strength or posture?

The dose used for pain relief and contouring is targeted at reducing excessive tension, not eliminating normal function. Most patients do not notice any meaningful reduction in strength or postural support. Dr. Farmah will discuss this with you at your consultation based on your individual anatomy and activity level.

Can I have this treatment if I am also being treated for bruxism?

es, and for many patients it makes sense to address both. Jaw tension and trapezius tension are closely interconnected, and treating the broader pattern of muscle overactivity often produces better overall outcomes than treating the jaw in isolation. Dr. Farmah can advise on the best combined approach at your consultation.

Is there any downtime?

None. You can return to normal activities the same day, avoiding intense exercise for 24 hours.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book directly through our website or by calling us on 07897 035557.
